This milkweed grows one to two feet tall, occurring as single stems or in clusters a few to many stems. It has a deep rootstock which helps it survive drought and fire.
Asclepias viridis is native to Hernando County. Preferring dry to moist, well-drained sandy soils.
Larval host to the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus) and soldier butterfly, (Danaus eresimus). Despite its name, this is not the preferred larval host of the monarch.
