Hamelia patens, var calusa is a native Firebush bred to a smaller size reaching 4 to 8 ft. tall. Firebush is the number one most visited pollinator in the state. Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. A must in the Florida Native Garden. The leaves remain a darker shade of red year-round and the blooms are brighter red-orange flowers. In the Fall the fruits attract many types of birds. A plant to be enjoyed year-round. Host plant to the Pluto Sphinx Moth.
These are an heirloom variety of Penta. They grow four to five feet tall. These are perennial as well. Available in pink or red. Non- native
This vine needs to be trellised. It reaches lengths of 25 feet. The purple blooms are scented and the fruit is edible. Purple passionflower is larval host plant for numerous butterfly species, including Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) and Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charithonia), the state butterfly of Florida. It also is host to the Crimson Patch Longwing (Heliconius erato), Red-banded hairstreak (Calycopis cecrops)and Julia Heliconian (Dryas iulia) butterflies. Pollinated by bees. NATIVE
Scorpiontail has tiny white blooms that offer a nectar source for some of our tiniest pollinators. Two feet tall to five feet wide. Re-seeds. Nectar plant for multiple butterflies.
Large red blooms top stems reaching 4 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide. This hibiscus prefers a moist to damp soil. Larval host of Gray Hairstreak, Painted Lady Butterfly, Common Checkered Skipper and Tropical Checkered Skipper butterflies and four moths: Pearly Wood Nymph, Yellow Scallop Moth, Io Moth, and Delightful Bird-Dropping Moths.
